The Eyrie Vineyards, South Block Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley, 2001
The Eyrie Vineyards is one of the pioneering estates of the Willamette Valley, founded by David Lett in 1965 and widely credited with helping establish Oregon Pinot Noir on the global stage. South Block is among the estate’s most historic vineyard parcels, planted in the original Dundee Hills vineyard and sourced from some of Eyrie’s oldest Pinot Noir vines. Farmed organically and produced with a restrained, low-intervention philosophy, the wine reflects Eyrie’s longstanding commitment to finesse, longevity, and transparency of site.
After more than two decades of aging, the 2001 vintage shows remarkable nuance and tertiary complexity. Aromas of dried cherry, cranberry, forest floor, rose petal, tea leaf, and mushroom unfold alongside subtle spice and earthy mineral notes. The palate is silky and resolved, with softened tannins, vibrant acidity, and a savory, persistent finish that highlights the graceful evolution and age-worthy structure characteristic of mature Pinot Noir.
Varietal: Pinot Noir
Appellation: Willamette Valley, Oregon, United States
Farming: Organically farmed; low-intervention
Style: Red. Mature, savory, and elegantly structured
