JL Chave Sélection, Offerus, Saint-Joseph Rouge, Rhône Valley, France, 2023
J.L. Chave Sélection is the négociant label of Jean-Louis Chave, created to produce wines from selected vineyards throughout the Northern Rhône alongside the family’s domaine wines. Offerus, first produced in 1995, is made entirely from Syrah grown across several sites in the southern part of Saint-Joseph, including vineyards around Mauves, Tournon and Saint-Jean-de-Muzols.
The 2023 was fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged for 18 to 24 months primarily in neutral French oak and larger wooden vessels. Dark cherry and blackberry are joined by violet, black pepper and savory notes, with the granite soils contributing a stony character. Fresh acidity and firm, fine tannins give the wine structure through a long, peppery finish.
Varietal: Syrah
Appellation: Saint-Joseph, Northern Rhône, France
Farming: Traditional viticulture
Style: Red. Savory, structured and peppery
