Jade Gross began making wine in Rioja after a career in restaurants, including several years at Mugaritz in the Basque Country. Piano Piano is made entirely from Tempranillo grown in a small parcel in San Vicente de la Sonsierra in Rioja Alta. Planted in 1987, the bush vines sit at around 480 meters on calcareous clay soils.
The 2022 was fully destemmed and hand-crushed, then fermented in open-top vessels before aging for 13 months in French oak. Ripe cherry, blackberry and red plum are joined by wildflowers and spice, with the oak remaining subtle. Fresh acidity and fine-grained tannins give the wine structure and balance through a long, elegant finish.
