Hudson Ranch was established by Lee Hudson in Carneros in 1981 and has become one of Napa Valley’s most respected vineyard sources, supplying fruit to many leading California producers while reserving select parcels for its own wines. Phoenix is the estate’s Merlot-led Bordeaux-style blend, drawn from several blocks across the ranch and named in the aftermath of the 2017 wildfires, which swept through the property while sparing its original buildings.
The 2021 is a blend of 58% Merlot, 28% Cabernet Sauvignon and 14% Cabernet Franc. Each component was fermented separately with native yeasts before the final wine was aged for 23 months in French oak, 60% new, and bottled unfined and unfiltered. Plush black cherry and red currant are layered with tobacco, cedar and savory spice. The palate is concentrated and supple, with dusty tannins providing structure through a long, polished finish.
