Gérard Boulay, Comtesse, Sancerre, Loire Valley, France, 2024
Gérard Boulay comes from a family that has grown grapes in Chavignol for centuries and is known for traditional Sauvignon Blanc from some of the village’s finest steep-slope vineyards. Comtesse is one of the domaine’s most limited wines, coming from 50- to 75-year-old vines in a prized section of the Monts Damnés vineyard. Here, Sauvignon Blanc grows on the Kimmeridgian limestone and marl soils known locally as terres blanches. The 2024 is concentrated but fresh, with ripe peach, nectarine and citrus joined by white flowers and subtle herbal notes. There is plenty of texture through the palate, balanced by bright acidity and a pronounced chalky, saline character that carries through the long finish. Varietal: Sauvignon Blanc Appellation: Sancerre, Loire Valley, France Farming: Organic, hand-farmed Style: White. Textured, mineral and saline
