Dominio del Challao has earned a cult following among collectors who track the new wave of terroir-driven Rioja. Angelita del Challao comes from old, high-altitude vines planted on exposed limestone terraces overlooking the Ebro Valley, parcels that Miguel Caño farms organically and almost entirely by hand. Production is extremely limited, and the cuvée has become one of the project’s most sought-after bottlings.
The 2021 is a co-fermented field blend led by Tempranillo with Garnacha, Graciano and a small portion of old-vine white grapes from the same plots. The wine is aromatically complex, offering black cherry, wild berries, violet and fresh herbs with a distinct mineral line from the limestone. The palate is concentrated, carried by fine-grained tannins and bright acidity through a persistent finish. This is a serious, age-worthy Rioja that represents one of the most compelling new voices in the region.
