The Chave family has been making wine in the Northern Rhône since 1481, with deep roots in Saint-Joseph as well as Hermitage. Their domaine Saint-Joseph is made entirely from Syrah grown on the steep hillsides around Mauves, where Jean-Louis Chave has spent decades restoring old vineyard terraces on the appellation’s granite slopes. The 2023 was vinified with roughly 30% whole clusters. Fresh and expressive, it shows blackberry, dark cherry and violet with black pepper and subtle savory notes. The palate is supple and finely structured, with velvety tannins and fresh acidity carrying the fruit through a long, perfumed finish.
