The Chave family has been making wine in the Northern Rhône since 1481 and is best known for its historic wines from Hermitage. L'Hermitage Rouge is made entirely from Syrah, assembled from old-vine parcels across several parts of the Hermitage hill. Each site contributes a different character to the final blend, from the granite and structure of Les Bessards to the richer fruit of Le Méal and the more floral character of L'Ermite. The 2023 is expressive and supple, with dark cherry and blackberry joined by violet, black olive, pepper and subtle smoky notes. The palate is concentrated but finely textured, with polished tannins and fresh acidity balancing the ripe fruit. Savory and mineral notes build through the long, perfumed finish.
