Domaine Clusel-Roch, Côte-Rôtie Les Schistes, 2022
Domaine Clusel-Roch is a small, historic family estate in the northern Rhône, known for farming some of Côte-Rôtie’s steepest terraces entirely by hand and working with massale-selected Serine, an old, aromatically intense strain of Syrah. Les Schistes comes from vineyards anchored in the appellation’s signature fractured schist soils, which naturally give the wine its precision, dark fruit profile, and finely etched tannins. The 2022 vintage is particularly expressive, marrying the warmth of the year with the domaine’s restrained, terroir-first approach.
Aromas of blackberry and violets lead, followed by subtle hints of smoked meat and cracked pepper, classic markers of Côte-Rôtie’s northern slopes. The palate is vibrant and structured, layering ripe dark fruit with savory mineral notes and the lifted spice of Serine. Tannins are firm but polished, carrying the wine into a long, detailed finish.
Varietal: Syrah
Appellation: Côte-Rôtie, Northern Rhône, France
Farming: Organic, hand-worked terraces
Style: Red. Aromatic, structured, and expressive
