Catherine & Pierre Breton, Clos Sénéchal, Bourgueil, Loire Valley, France, 2022
Catherine and Pierre Breton have been important figures in organic and biodynamic farming in the Loire for decades, working primarily with Cabernet Franc in Bourgueil and Chinon. Clos Sénéchal is one of their more structured Bourgueil bottlings, from a south-facing hillside parcel in Restigné planted in 1962. Here, Cabernet Franc grows on clay and limestone over the region’s characteristic tuffeau chalk. The 2022 was harvested by hand, destemmed and macerated for three weeks with native yeasts, then aged for approximately 18 months in large wooden foudres. Dark cherry, plum and blackcurrant are joined by earthy, savory notes, with the limestone-rich site contributing freshness and structure. The tannins are firm but finely textured, giving the wine plenty of depth while keeping the finish lively and balanced. Varietal: Cabernet Franc Appellation: Bourgueil, Loire Valley, France Farming: Certified Organic and Biodynamic Style: Red. Structured, savory and fresh
