Cantalapiedra Viticultores, Majuelo El Espejo, Castilla y León, Spain, 2023
Cantalapiedra Viticultores is the family project of Isaac Cantalapiedra and his son Manuel in La Seca, where the family has grown grapes for generations. They began bottling their own wines in 2014, focusing on organically farmed Verdejo and individual vineyards around Rueda. Majuelo El Espejo comes from a 3.6-hectare vineyard planted by Isaac in 1999 at roughly 750 meters, with sandy-clay soils over marl and limestone. The 2023 was harvested by hand and whole-cluster pressed, then fermented spontaneously in 500- and 600-liter French oak barrels. It remained in barrel for approximately 11 months before another seven months in stainless steel and was bottled without fining or filtration. It is a richer, more textured expression of Verdejo, with pear, peach and citrus joined by subtle herbal and savory notes. The palate is creamy but fresh, with firm acidity and a long, saline finish. Varietal: Verdejo Appellation: Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León, Spain Farming: Organic Style: White. Textured, savory and saline
